Digital smile design is a planning method, not a treatment. Photographs, video of you speaking and smiling, and a 3D scan are used to design the proposed result before any tooth is touched — and then to test that design in your mouth in temporary material.
Why the mock-up is the point
The design on screen is useful. The trial smile — the same design placed over your teeth in temporary composite, with nothing removed — is what actually protects you. You see the shape and length in your own face, in daylight, while talking, before anything irreversible happens. If it is too long, too square, too white, that is the moment to say so, and changing it costs nothing.
When it is worth doing
- Six or more veneers or crowns across the smile line
- Any case where tooth length or the smile line itself is changing
- Combined treatment — implants and veneers in the same plan
- Whenever the patient is uncertain about how far to go
For a single chipped tooth or one bonding repair it is unnecessary, and we will say so.
What the process looks like
- Records. Photos, video, 3D scan, bite registration. About an hour.
- Design. Proportions worked out against your face, lip line and the way you speak — not a template smile.
- Trial smile. The design placed over your unprepared teeth. You keep it on for the rest of the day.
- Revision. Changes made and re-tested if needed.
- Treatment. Only once you have approved the shape you saw.
Cost
Included with treatment when a full case is planned here. As a standalone consultation and mock-up it is charged separately — that fee is deducted if you go ahead.
The honest limitation
A design predicts shape, length and proportion accurately. It predicts final colour only approximately, because ceramic behaves differently from temporary composite under light. The shade decision stays a separate conversation, made against a physical shade guide in daylight — not from a screen render.
Common questions
Is the trial smile permanent?
No. It is temporary composite placed over unprepared teeth and removed the same day or shortly after. Nothing is drilled and nothing is committed at this stage.
Can I take photos of the mock-up?
Please do — that is what it is for. Take them outdoors, indoors, in a video call. Judging a smile from one clinic photograph under clinic lighting is exactly the mistake we are trying to avoid.
Will the final result match the design exactly?
Shape and length, very closely. Colour, approximately — see the note above. Ceramic has depth and translucency that temporary composite cannot imitate, which usually means the final result looks more natural, not less.
Do I need to be in İzmir for the design stage?
For the design itself we can work from photographs and a video you send. The trial smile has to be done in the chair, so it is scheduled as the first appointment of your treatment trip.
What if I do not like the design?
Then it is changed, which is the whole reason for doing it before rather than after. There is no limit to revisions at the digital stage and revisions at the mock-up stage are normal, not a complication.
